What do I need to register?
Registration is a simple process. There are two ways you can make an application to become a registered motor vehicle trader – online or paper.
Online – the quickest and easiest way to complete an application is to use our online service available through the 'Register to be a trader' option.
Paper – open the relevant application form, type in the requisite data (using the tab key or mouse to navigate from field to field), print out and post to the address on the form.
To complete an application to register you will need to know whether you are required to register as an individual or a company.
Individual
If, as an individual, you carry on the business of motor vehicle trading or hold out that you are a motor vehicle trader, then you must apply for registration as an individual.
The application requires you to provide your full name, date of birth and residential address, along with the trading name of your business and address for service. You will also be asked to provide contact information such as phone, fax and email, and your driver licence and passport number (if held).

Company
If a limited liability company is carrying on the business of motor vehicle trading, then the company must become a registered motor vehicle trader. Companies are registered with the New Zealand Companies Office at www.companies.govt.nz. A person concerned in the management of the company must make the application for registration on behalf of the company.
Application requires you to provide the registered company name and number, registered office address and address for service along with other contact information such as phone, fax and email.
You will be required to provide the full name, date of birth and residential address of all persons involved in the management of the business, that is, all persons listed as a director of the registered company plus any other persons involved in managing the business. You will also be asked for driver licence and passport numbers for all such persons (if held).
Statutory declarations
Each individual motor vehicle trader and each director/manager of a company motor vehicle trader must complete a statutory declaration, which states that they are not disqualified from registration as a motor vehicle trader in their own right.
The statutory declaration(s) will be sent to you once an application to register as a motor vehicle trader has been received.
The document(s) must be signed by the applicant, and be witnessed by a solicitor, a Justice of the Peace or other person authorised to take a statutory declaration under the Oaths and Declarations Act 1957, and returned to our office to complete registration.
Fees
The cost to register as a motor vehicle trader is $583.00. This includes the registration fee, GST and a levy for the Motor Vehicle Disputes Tribunal.
